đą A spark in rural India
BornâŻChandraâŻMohanâŻJain on 11âŻDecemberâŻ1931 in the tiny village of Kuchwada, MadhyaâŻPradesh, the future guru grew up questioning every rule he met. Stories from classmates describe the boy challenging teachers, priests, even shopâkeepers over matters of logic and spiritual dogma.âŻThat early insistence on unfettered inquiry would later define his entire movement
đ§ Philosophy, awakening & a new name
University days at Jabalpur and Saugar sharpened his debating skills; masterâs degrees in philosophy paid the bills while he toured India giving fiery talks against organized religion.âŻAtâŻ21 he is said to have experienced a sudden inner âexplosionâ of silenceâan awakening he never framed as final truth but as a door every seeker could walk through.
âLife is not a problem to be solved, but a mystery to be lived.â

đ§ââď¸ Meditation and His Teachings
Osho believed that everyone can become enlightenedâa state of pure awareness and peace. He taught people not to blindly follow religions or traditions, but to look within themselves.
He introduced a special method called Dynamic Meditation, which includes:
- Fast breathing
- Jumping and dancing
- Letting out anger or crying
- Standing still and silent
- Celebrating with joy
This helped many people feel relaxed and free.
âDonât choose. Accept life as it is in its totality.â

âď¸ Spiritual Journey
In 1974, Osho opened a spiritual center in Pune, India, where thousands of people from across the world came to learn from him. It was full of meditation, music, therapy sessions, and new ideas about life. People wore maroon robes and practiced living in awareness, love, and freedom. Osho gave daily talks on many topicsâZen, love, death, Jesus, Buddha, and more.
In the early 1980s, Osho moved to the United States and started a huge commune in Oregon called Rajneeshpuram. It had homes, farms, schools, and even an airport!
But soon, problems started. The commune had clashes with local people and the government. Some of Oshoâs close followers were found guilty of serious crimes, including food poisoning at local restaurants. Osho himself was arrested for visa issues in 1985 and had to leave the U.S.
After being rejected by several countries, Osho returned to India and reopened his Pune center. By then, he had changed his name simply to âOshoâ, which comes from the Japanese word meaning “master” or “teacher”.
He became more quiet, his health got worse, but his talks were deeper than ever. He spoke of love, silence, and how to live fully in the present.
âTo be creative means to be in love with life.â

đď¸ Death and Legacy
Osho passed away on January 19, 1990, at the age of 58. His body was cremated in Pune. On his memorial, it says:
“OSHO â Never Born, Never Died, Only Visited This Planet Earth…”
Today, the Osho International Meditation Resort in Pune is still active. His books are published in over 60 languages, and his videos are watched by millions. His teachings have influenced many modern spiritual leaders and even wellness programs.
âThe real question is not whether life exists after death. The real question is whether you are alive before death.â
